I've read many
articles on landscape design and even though I'm not an expert, the
following points should be considered when creating a plan.

| Functionality
of your
yard Drawing a plan of current and proposed future land use may reveal problems and solutions. Consider the ease of mowing the grass. Single trees can become a nuisance whereas a group of trees is easier to maneuver around. A row of Colorado Blue Spruce will trap snow which is good for increasing the soil moisture but can increase your chores if it lands on your driveway. Space Requirements of Colorado Blue Spruce A mature spruce in
Calgary will reach 35 feet in height and spread up
to 15 feet in diameter.
Virtues of Colorado Blue Spruce The color varies from
a rich green to a silvery blue, which is most
remarkable in the winter landscape. A planting of spruce will
create a micro climate suitable for more tender shrubs and trees.

Visually
Acceptable Result Staking the location
of each tree
helps give a visual of the proposed planting. Look at the planting from
the public view as well as from your personal viewpoints. It should
enhance the public view of your home as well as meet your personal
objectives.
Utilities Repairing damaged utilities is expensive. Marking the underground utilities before digging is a good way to avoid extra costs. The "Call Before You Dig" number is 1-800-242-3447. Consideration should also be given to your private services such as septic fields, water lines, weeping tile, or interference with wireless communications. Local Bylaws The M.D. of Rocky View has a bylaw restricting the planting of shelter belts (2 or more rows of trees) near the roads to avoid snow drifting. |
